The History of "Away in a Manger"

"Away in a Manger" is a wholly American Christmas carol that first appeared in print in the early 1880s. Despite decades of attribution to Martin Luther, the lyrics are anonymous and have no connection to the German reformer. The carol quickly became a Sunday-school favorite across the United States and spread globally.

The earliest known printing of the first two verses dates to 1882 in The Christian Cynosure, often titled "Luther's Cradle Song." By 1885 it was being sung in Sunday schools from Nashville to India. The third verse was added in 1892 and published in Charles H. Gabriel's Vineyard Songs. Today it remains one of the most beloved lullaby-style carols, evoking the humble birth of Jesus in a stable.

Fun Fact: The false Luther attribution persisted well into the 20th century, even appearing on sheet music and in hymnals.

Full Lyrics

Verse 1
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

Verse 2
The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.
I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,
And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

Verse 3
Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven to live with thee there.

Standard text from the 1895 Kirkpatrick edition. Minor wording variations exist across hymnals.
